HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service (FIS) is responsible for the department’s civil and criminal investigations.

FIS provides HMRC with an effective investigation arm to enforce the Department’s compliance policies. This enables the Department to deliver against the strategic responsibilities across all the taxes and duties it administers. This includes complex offshore evasion, international smuggling of illicit excise goods, exports of controlled weapons and technology, labour market abuses, VAT and Self-Assessment repayment frauds and a host of other fraud attacks targeted at the tax system.

FIS is home to a wide range of people with a variety of skills and professional backgrounds – including accountants, cybercrime specialists, criminal justice professionals, tax professionals and operational delivery support teams to name but a few. We use a range of powers and approaches to protect funding for UK public services, investigating the most harmful tax cheats and ensuring nobody is beyond our reach.

Covert Operations, Digital Exploitation (CODE) sits within HMRC’s wider Fraud Investigation Service (FIS). Working across Law Enforcement and government, CODE provides investigative tools and covert techniques to front-line investigations and works with key partners to develop and provide access to new technology and systems to enable investigators to respond to serious and complex tax evasion and crime.

Job description

The primary responsibility of the Higher Evidential Graphic Designer role is to produce multimedia-based presentations of evidence for use in trial and tribunals, to aid the understanding of key prosecution messages of a complex nature.

Person specification

  • Meeting with case officer clients and Counsel nationally to understand and develop the design concepts for the prosecution case, present draft versions and discuss case development.
  • Design interactive multimedia presentations for use at courts and tribunals to allow greater understanding of complex prosecution concepts by members of the jury and other court attendees.
  • Deal with amendments to presentations as the case develops and becomes trial-ready, sometimes including amendments of an urgent nature close to, or even during, the trial.
  • Ensure presentations meet the needs of the Criminal Justice System, including compatibility with court room technologies that are available.

Essential Criteria

  • Experience of producing high quality graphic design products to a professional standard
  • Knowledge of design principles
  • Significant experience working with design tools including video editing, photo editing, graphic design, animation and web publishing products
  • Willingness to be flexible with working hours in order to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently under pressure and to tight deadlines and undertake multiple projects simultaneously
  • This post requires National Security Vetting at Security Check (SC) clearance level and you must hold SC vetting or be willing to apply for SC vetting or be willing to apply for it.

Desirable Criteria

  • Full Driving licence
  • Previous experience of presenting evidence in a law enforcement environment
  • Knowledge of the UK criminal justice system

This role requires security clearance to SC. Any job offer is conditional to the attainment of the security clearance to SC and thus, the security clearance is mandatory. Please be aware that those who do not attain the required security clearance will not be allowed to carry on in this particular post.

There will be a Training and Assessment Period of 6 months for this role.

Selection process details

How to Apply

As part of the application process, you will be asked to provide the following:

  • A name-blind CV including your job history and previous experiences, as outlined in the advert.
  • A 500-word Personal Statement. Please explain in no more than 500 words why you are suitable for this role and how you meet the essential criteria as outlined in the job description.

Sift

In the event of a large number of applications being received, an initial sift may be held on the CV and Personal Statement.

At full sift the CV, Personal Statement and Behaviours will be assessed, with the successful candidates being invited to interview.

Interview

During the panel interview, we will assess your Technical skills and you will be asked Strength-based questions.

Technical Skills: Candidates will be required to undertake a practical test/presentation. This will be an opportunity for the candidate to display their technique and ability. Further details on the presentation requirements will be issued with the interview invite.
