The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council. We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need.
We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.
We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning. In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.
Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas:
- Nursery Workers
- Teaching Assistants
- Leadership/Management; and
- Customer Care.
We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Councilâ€™s Job Shop.
Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

What is the job role?
Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to join our committed English team?
The successful candidate will teach within our programme of courses that lead to Functional Skills or GCSE certification. We also meet the needs of some learners by offering stepping stone qualifications or progression through ILP target achievement. You will be an integral part of the team for IAG, assessment and enrolments.
You will join a group of tutors who are line managed by an experienced Level 2 Lecturer. You will work with colleagues and partner organisations in order to ensure the ongoing, high quality English programme citywide through face-to-face and online settings.
We are committed to giving adult learners opportunities to achieve, and progress towards their life-goals. Classes run during the day and evenings, and you may be required to work in the evening, depending on programme and Service need. We also partner with the Workplace Team to deliver classes within Apprenticeship and Study Programmes that run outside of school term dates.
We have the following opportunities for you to join us:
1 x part time post: 190 teaching hours per year plus non-contact time â€“ 8.79 hours per week.
This post is initially a 12 month, fixed-term contract.
Due to the restrictions in place because of Covid-19, we may hold interviews online.
This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a candidate who is a dynamic educator, with proven success in working with learners across a wide range of ages and abilities and committed to continuous quality improvement.
You will need to have current knowledge of the English curriculum and qualifications for post-16 learners. You should be able to give examples of excellent practice delivering learning within a classroom and experience of teaching via online platforms is preferred. The successful candidate will be able to show that they can work flexibility within a working environment and be able to respond quickly to the demands of the programme and the Service.
In your personal statement, please evidence skills and knowledge in the subject and person specifications, particularly addressing the following within formal or informal settings:
- demonstrate your ability to deliver flexible learning programmes to meet both group and individual needs
- explain how you have delivered effective programmes of learning face to face, and through online platforms if you have experience of this.
- give examples of how you strive to constantly improve your quality of teaching, learning and assessment and your ability to respond to significant changes in your teaching sector or environment.
Minimum qualifications: certification of level 3, or higher, in English and level 2 in maths. Preferred QTS/QTLS. However, this is a rare opportunity for someone who is interested in a teaching career in Adult Learning and committed to undertaking professional qualifications.
