Summary

At M&S, sustainability (which we call Plan A) is at the heart of everything we do. We’re looking for a strategic and passionate Sustainability Manager as part of the Central ESG team with responsibility for our Group-wide net zero emissions strategy and approach to water, waste, responsible sourcing and biodiversity. This is a multi-faceted role, giving you accountability for our carbon reporting and climate risk as well as playing a key role to support the Head of ESG in the overall business sustainability strategy, targets and action planning.

This is a high-impact role working collaboratively with the Central ESG team as well as with Plan A teams in our Foods, Fashion, Home & Beauty, International, Property & Retail businesses, and key functions including Finance, Logistics and Digital & Tech.

To stay close to customers, our support teams are in the office three days a week as we believe that skills are developed through collaboration, and that spending time together makes us more creative and connected.

  • What you’ll do

Your key accountabilities will include

  • Strategic Leadership & Compliance: Define and lead the Group’s net zero strategy, ensuring alignment with commercial plans and compliance with current and future legislation.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Plan A teams and key functions (Finance, Logistics, Digital) to develop credible emissions reduction plans and integrate climate risks into business planning.
  • Performance Tracking & Reporting: Own internal and external reporting of climate/net zero targets, ensuring transparency, accuracy, and alignment with best practice and stakeholder expectations.
  • Policy & Technical Expertise: Advise on regulatory changes, support external disclosures (e.g. TCFD, Modern Slavery Statement), and ensure robust policies across environmental and responsible sourcing agendas.
  • Innovation & Industry Engagement: Manage the Plan A Accelerator Fund, build sustainability capability across M&S, and represent the business in key industry forums to bring in new thinking and horizon scan for emerging trends.

Who you are

Your skills and experience will include

  • Strong experience across sustainability topics including carbon, water, waste, and human rights.
  • High analytical and numerical skills, with expertise in GHG Protocol, SBTi, and TCFD.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify complex issues.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and influence across multiple functions.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with a track record of setting and delivering against targets.
