The main purpose of the role is to assist Solicitors and wider legal team in the progression of cases and legal work within the Department.

To run own caseload where required.

Main Responsibilities:

To review and prepare applications in the Magistrates, Crown and County Courts (to include all forms of Civil Preventative Orders and Closure Orders) and to support case preparation for defending civil claims against the Force.

To review and respond to applications in relation to Family Court disclosure Orders, where referred from the Disclosure team.

To review and prepare legal case bundles incorporating evidence, exhibits and witness statements in readiness for court, tribunal or panel hearings as requested and ensuring key witnesses are warned.

To prepare Briefs to Counsel as requested.

To undertake legal research as required, including monitoring case law across the range of work of the legal team and sharing monthly updates of significant developments in case law to the legal team and colleagues in other departments as appropriate.

To provide legal advice on queries raised through the Legal Inbox, as requested/allocated.

To fully utilise the IT and Legal Case Management systems as requested.

To liaise with key stakeholders in case preparation and update the required case management systems and file records at regular review stages.   

To assist where required in the sharing of lesson learning across the Force.

To participate in meetings and work as part of the team, handling telephone calls and correspondence as required.

To undertake other duties commensurate with the nature, level of responsibility and grading of this post, as required.

Knowledge:

Significant operational experience in a legal role i.e. paralegal or

Recognised legal qualification such as a Member of the Institute of Legal Executives or

Law Degree

Experience:

Experience of working in a legal environment such as a solicitor’s office, chambers or public authority/private sector legal department

Key Skills:

Ability to communicate with a wide range of people both verbally and in writing. 

Capable of working to tight deadlines

Capable of prioritising workload

Ability to use own initiative and work unsupervised but aware when to refer upwards

ICT and keyboard skills
